The Fence

I have stood at the edge of this pasture for years

And watched the coming and going of many creatures

Shaggy ponies lived within my borders

A rooster pheasant sat atop me giving orders

Squirrels scurried up my post and along my rails

Raccoons played hide and seek and chased their tails

A black bear lumbered over me

Robins and blackbirds perched to see

Goats played

Donkeys brayed

Wild turkeys wandered through with a gobble gobble

A milk cow had her calf who stood with a wobble

Children sat atop me watching frogs in the pond

Then ran off playing games with a magic wand

A doe hid her fawn in the tall grass near my post

Hawks and eagles soared above to see the most

Horses galloped and grazed

Sand-hill cranes cackled and amazed

A skunk scampered past leaving behind a stink

I was even visited once by a mink

Foxes and coyotes scooted under my rails in search of a chase

A water snake slithered past as if it were in a race

Butterflies with their wings alighted

And to this day I remain delighted
